The multicultural nature of the IB Diploma exposes students to a language other
than their first language or mother tongue. Bilingual students have the opportunity
to study their second language at the A1 or A2 level, while others may study a foreign
language at the B or Ab initio level. Students who wish to study two A1 languages
must be equally fluent in both, and may thus gain exemption from a further Group
2 language.
LANGUAGE A2
This program is designed for study at both Higher and Standard Levels by speakers
with a high level of competence in the target language. The program combines both
literature and language components and primarily meets the needs of students who
are bilingual or have lived in a country where the language is spoken and are beyond
the foreign learner stage.
LANGUAGE B
This is a foreign language learning program designed for study at both Higher and
Standard Levels, by students with previous experience of learning the language.
The focus of the program is on language acquisition and development, a major part
of which comprises detailed study of literary and other texts. The program is designed
to meet the needs of students who have studied a language for 2 to 5 years prior
to their IB Diploma session.
AB INITIO
This is a foreign language program designed for study over two years by students
who have no previous experience of learning the target language. It meets the needs
of students who either have had little opportunity for foreign language study or
are interested in learning a new foreign language. The Ab initio language program
is offered only at the Standard Level.
Note: The Ab initio language program may only be taken at Standard
Level (SL). No B or Ab initio language may be taken as a Self-Taught course. |
